THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
ABOUT DOWN BY THE WATER

This is Jemesk Graymarch, PB David Giuntoli. Six weeks prior to the beginning of our story, he underwent memory erasure surgery ("took the brain bleach," to use the common vernacular for it) to erase the memory of his dead wife, according to his best friend Annie. Until his reeducation is complete, he works as a secretary for Dr. Tom Bailey, who notably oversaw his botched memory erasure surgery.

This is Dawn, PB Katie McGrath. She is Jemesk's wife, who he killed, who is now a ghost in their home, and who does not blame him for it (all things Jemesk did not know upon their second first meeting). It's difficult for her to manifest as a freshly dead ghost, so it took her a while to gather up enough strength for that. She claims that she's lingered on to help him, and that his work forced him to take the brain bleach because of the events surrounding her death. She doesn't want him to trust them. He's not even sure if he can trust her. She's mentioned in passing that there's something unearthly after her.

This is Annie Tark, PB Evan Rachel Wood. Annie was born and partially raised in the south flatlands of the nation of Cassair, though she doesn't admit to it when confronted about it. She is ashamed of her heritage due to Kaddarsian prejudices against the Cassairi. She was kidnapped as collateral by a branch of Miratech as a child, and vowed to make those responsible pay. Her parents never paid up. Sometime in the interim, she's learned to control her rage and has become a doctor, but that rage is still very much a part of her. She's good friends with Jemesk and Clyde, and was friends with Dawn before she died.

This is Dr. Thomas Bailey, who is PB Jeffrey Combs and therefore will do nothing morally reprehensible at all ever. In all honesty, he is a very skilled surgeon and has published more than one watershed discovery that's done a lot of good, and he does think of himself in general as a champion for humanity, even if humanity tends to agree that he's creepy and is secretly championing some other race when they're not looking. He is driven and intelligent, and absolutely focused on his work. He corrected and salvaged Jemesk's brain after another surgeon "nearly made [Jemesk] a vegetable," and has apparently taken a special interest in him since.

This is Sam Heron, PB Lucas Till. Sam is sunny, idealistic, and laid-back in most things. He kills people because he thinks it's necessary, and that he must be the one to do it since no one else will see sense. He thinks they're changing into something not human. What this has to do with anything at all hasn't been explained yet, so don't worry about that just now.

This is Heraclitus "Clyde" Jones, PB Janove Ottesen. He was kidnapped from the highlands of Cassair as a child around the same time as Annie. He's good friends with her, but dislikes Jemesk. Greatly. What he's done with his life since hasn't been written up yet.
