Plastic

Cliff remembers a chorus girl he loved long ago – remembers the plain gold band he slipped around her finger - the incorrect finger - as he told her, "The gold may be plastic, but what I feel will never be."

Years later, he'll look back on that day with smug male pride and think, Yeah, I totally had her number. He may even try to remember the girl's name.

And perhaps, continents apart, a girl named Lilah may tug at a chained plastic ring and smile, remembering the persistent little boy who made her realize early on she was gay.
