Cygnelius comes home from secondary school with smatterings of dirt on his young face balancing a jar of insects atop his borrowed theoretical thaumaturgy textbooks. It's such a strange image that Meredith has to blink twice to make sure she isn't imagining it.
"Cygnelius, honey," Meredith says wearily. "What are the bugs for?"
"You did tell me not to blow up any more furniture," Cygnelius says. "And I'm going to need a good thesis for university."
Meredith is only sometimes sure she didn't give birth to a supernatural creature. Then she remembers who Cyg's father is and is never certain.
