Cliff liked to think he was a good man, and sensible. When his parents died, he worked hard to scrape by on his own, and he had done well enough to get through college and training on his own. His superiors trusted him, and his peers admired him. Yeah, he was a good man in a rotten city.
"Look, I know you could use the extra money. You're a simple creature if you pass this up, kid," Sergeant Dennings said. "And a dead one to boot."
But, he lamented, what worth had a good man in a city like his?
