When Valentio was commanded to call Apollo Merces the king, he did as he was told. That was an impressive crown on his head, after all, and there were men with pointy sticks who were very adamant that it was impressive, too.

When Valentio was told to bow down, he didn't think twice; growing up common, he had grown used to submission. It was great for surprising others when you weren't as snugly under their thumbs as they'd thought.

Valentio had no cunning plan. He had his head and nobody who really wanted it ornamenting their pikes, however, and that wasn't nothing.
